The story of the original Golden Bomb begins over half a century ago when in 1956 our Grandfather and founder of Wilbert's, Arthur Wilbert decided to build a 1954 Buick and go racing! Traveling to many short tracks in Upstate New York the Gold painted car quickly became known as the A-1 Golden Bomb. Through the years the car had many fan favorite drivers such as Pat O'Neil, Dick Emerson and Ralph Moak. Due to the cars extreme success on the track it quickly became a local legend and attempts were made to actually ban the car from the track. Sadly in the mid 60's the car was pulled from the track never to see the asphalt again. The sands of time took their tole and much of the history of the car was lost along the way. All that remains are a few photos and the memories from those that remember the car.
In 2018 the decision was made to field two cars in an effort to revive the legend of the Golden Bomb. Wilbert's Racing Division was formed and work quickly began on building two purpose built Chevrolet Cobalt's to compete in the local Pro-4cylinder divisions. After initial tear down the process of transforming both cars into Golden Bombs took nearly an entire year.
Wilbert's has always had a long standing history of being involved in local short track racing dating back to the 1950's when the original Golden Bomb dominated local tracks. That tradition continues today and became a motivating factor in our commitment to the re-development of a race team. The A-1 (Arthur) Golden Bomb made its official return to the race track and is flanked by its twin the P-1 (Peter) Golden Bomb. Both cars are rolling tributes to the men who left a lifelong impression on anyone fortunate enough to cross their paths in life. They were responsible for founding, forming and shaping the reasons our family stands proud today. With some very big shoes to fill we hope everyone can get a chance to come help and cheer on these new Golden Bombs. Just as the sign said that hung forever on the wall of our grandfathers office.... "Lead, Follow, or get the Hell out of our way!"
